In the 21st century, Science permeates every aspect of our lives and it is vital that students develop proficiency in science literacy. An understanding of science is essential to many other professions including the study of law, engineering, construction and the mechanical trades.
Our aim is that all students develop a proficiency in science literacy. Our goals are to: relate science to technology, society and the environment; develop the skills, strategies, and habits of mind required for scientific inquiry; and understand the basic concepts of science.
Through critical thinking and hands on activities the science teachers at A.Y. Jackson S.S. build literacy, mathematical and inquiry skills in students - preparing them for the challenges they will face in their future pathway, whether in the workplace, apprenticeship, college and/or university.
The Grade 9 and 10 courses are offered in both the academic (English and Immersion) and the applied level. The curriculum is organized into five strands. Four of these strands cover content focusing on one of the science disciplines: Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Earth and Space Science. The fifth strand, interwoven throughout the course, focuses on essential skills in scientific investigations and career exploration. The grade nine and ten courses provide the foundation for the senior courses which specialize in one of the science disciplines. We also offer Physics, Biology and Chemistry at the university level in both grades eleven and twelve. In addition, we offer Biology in grade eleven and Chemistry in grade twelve at the college level.
