Modern Languages

Our Modern Languages Department offers Core French, French Immersion and Extended French Programs from grade 9 through grade 12. In addition, we offer level 1 (grade 10),level 2 (grade 11) and level 3 (grade 12) Spanish language courses.
Our French and Spanish language students improve their competencies in listening, speaking, reading and writing through a variety of activities. These include the study of various texts (articles, short stories, novels, plays, etc.) film studies, oral presentations, multi-media projects, listening and grammar exercises.
For the past three years, grade 12 French students have been given the opportunity to take the DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue Français). This exam tests students in all four language competencies and many of our students have earned their diploma at the B1 or B2 level. As well each year, some of our students participate in various French competitions and are very successful. In April 2012, a grade 10 student won first place in the OCDSB French Public Speaking Competition and represented our Board at the provincial competition in Toronto. In May 2012, a group of nine grade 11 and 12 students participated in the prestigious Ottawa University and Carleton University Concours de Français langue seconde. One of our grade 12 students won second place in the Extended French category and a grade 11 student won fourth place in the Core French category.
In March 2013, the department organized a 10 day visit to Paris and the Loire Valley to provide a French language and cultural experience to 24 Core French and Immersion students. The excursion was a great success for all involved, and further trips are being considered.
